Potential Energy Savings

Home / Air Duct Cleaning / Potential Energy Savings
August 21, 2015

It takes a lot of energy to heat and cool your home or business. In fact, studies have shown that heating, ventilating and air conditioning accounts for 30% of the energy used in the average home or small business. And in larger buildings, heating and air conditioning can account for almost half of the monthly energy bill.

Surprisingly, even though HVAC systems play such a fundamental role in heating and cooling our spaces, they are often poorly maintained. Over time, our air ducts become dirty through normal, everyday use. As a result, this can cause poor indoor air quality as well as increased utility costs.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), a build-up of .042 inches of dirt on a heating or cooling coil can result in a decrease of a HVAC system’s efficiency by 21%.

To put that into perspective, .042 inches of dirt is about the same thickness as a ring or even your fingernail. This thin layer of particles decreases the HVAC system’s ability to properly cool down or heat up a building. As a result, utility costs for both heating and cooling will be much higher.

In another study conducted by the National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA):

Researchers have proven that cleaning even lightly-fouled heating and cooling systems can result in energy savings of 11%, and cleaning heavily-fouled systems can yield even greater results.

On a positive note, families and businesses that properly maintain and regularly clean their HVAC systems can benefit from reduced maintenance cost and an extended life expectancy for their system.

As a proud member of NADCA, our equipment and process allow us to access each duct to ensure the entire system is clean. No part of the duct system is left untouched, and all debris is extracted and collected back into our equipment for disposal. When your duct system is clean, it can operate more efficiently, which in turn can reduce energy costs. Additionally, a dirt-free system might also improve your family or employee’s overall health and wellbeing since the amount of pollutants and allergens circulating through your ducts decreases.
